Melt and pour soaps are soaps made from already made soaps. They are melted using heat and then modified a little bit and turned into a mould to become bar again. Advantages of making this type of soap are: it saves time, there is less likelihood of hazards and does not have a long curing time. Once the soap is dried, it is ready for use.
Virtually any ready made soap can be remelted. Most soap makers prefer the glycerin soap base for melt and pour. When it is remelted, a lot of ingredients can be added to suit your personal use which range from essential oils, colours, mould, antiseptic ingredients etc.
It is also possible to prepare a mild liquid soap from bar soap with a little tweaking, you'll get there. This soap to be frank is not as effective as the liquid soap we discussed earlier but can be used as hand wash, body wash, and also washing of clothes with mild dirt. With just 200g soap, you can make a liquid soap of 4 litres.
How do we go about making the melt and pour soap?
- Firstly, get a glycerin soap base or any other soap of your choice and grate using a grater
- Next Pour a little water in a pot and place under low heat
- Gradually add your grated soap base into the pot containing water and stir continuously
- when it has gradually dissolve, add other ingredients of your choice like colour, essential oil, antiseptics, etc and stir to blend
- Prepare your mold and turn it into a mold, cover the mold with cardboard and finally with a towel
- Leave it for 24 hours.
- After 24 hrs your soap is ready.
For liquid soap
- Firstly, get a glycerin soap base or any other soap of your choice and grate using a grater ( The soap base i used last was Eva gold)
- Next Pour a little water in a pot and place under low heat
- Gradually add your grated soap base into the pot containing water and stir continuously
- when it has gradually dissolved, add other ingredients of your choice like colour, essential oil, stir to blend
- Add little sulphonic acid, little caustic soda solution if you had dissolved some the previous day and finally add little soda ash solution.
- Add more water during the stirring in fire and mix until it thickens a little bit
- Drop it down and allow to cool
- Cover and leave it for 24 hours.
- After 24 hours add enough water to make it up to 4 litres. If there are chunks that are not dissolved, simply use stirrer to break them but if it is still completely not smooth filter it.
