Earlier, I posted recipe on how to make liquid soap using the
cold process. Today I’m going to share with you the hot process of making
liquid soap. In one of the previous post, I talk about the difference between
caustic soda (NaOH, Sodium hydroxide) and Caustic Potash (KOH, Potassium
hydroxide). Caustic soda is used for
making solid soaps, while caustic potash is used for making liquid soap.
In the past, caustic potash (KOH) was made from the ashes of
woods. Woods were burnt to ashes. This ashes was taken and the
organic content extracted. For today we are not dwelling on that so, I saved that
for future tutorial.
You will need gloves, goggles and vinegar for preventive
measures.
Materials
- 38.4 oz or 1088.62g Coconut oil
- 10.31 oz or 292.28g KOH
- 21.2 oz. or 601g water
- 9.6 oz or 272.2g Glycerine
Method
- Measure out all materials needed
- Melt the coconut oil under low heat in a pot using a stove or an oven
- Pour water into a container and add glycerine followed by KOH. Do not turn water into KOH rather turn KOH into water.
- Use hand blender to blend or you can use a wooden spatula to stir the ingredients together in the pot on top the stove with low heat. Gradually the mixture will begin to thicken, a little longer the mixture will become grainy continue to blend or stir.
- Leave the mixture there under low heat. It will continue to thicken. Check on it every 30 minutes and then stir very well. Remove the pan from heat occasionally and return to the stove as needed.
- It may take several hours to completely saponify. To check if your liquid soap is ready, scoop a little of the mixture and put into water in a container. After few minutes if the water becomes cloudy, then you still need to work on it but if it is clear, then your liquid soap is ready.
- Drop it down and allow to cool. Remember, now it looks like semi solid. You are going to dilute it.
- If you want to use all of the liquid soap, you can start all diluting the liquid soap with water to your taste or follow your instinct but if you want to use some much later then scoop the amount you want to store and then add water to dilute it while it is on low heat on the stove and stir until it blends.
- Turn into your dispenser.
