Have you ever stayed in the same office with your colleagues and you are not represented in any activity? Have you ever wondered why your colleagues are chosen for important functions and you aren’t? Have you ever pondered over the reasons why your junior is used for a position that is yours?
Then this post is specially designed for you.
My dear friend, you cannot be relevant in your workplace when
you refuse to make reasonable input in your workplace. The mantle of credibility
can not be handed to you when you shy away from your responsibilities.
You can not be entrusted with anything valuable when you do
not have a clear vision of how to move that organization forward.
So how can one go about this?
KNOW YOUR ORGANIZATION'S GOALS AND OBJECTIVES AND WORK TOWARDS THEM:
Most people think showing up every day is enough for the
organization, but that is not enough. You have to know exactly what the
organization seeks to achieve and what is expected of you. Then work towards
that need. Are your skills enough to meet those needs? If they aren’t, you need
to upgrade. Take courses, learn skills, go for more training, or whatever is
needed to keep you valuable.
BE AVAILABLE
Most people show up at
work but dodge from areas where their services are highly needed. At the end of the day, they
envy those who receive rewards for their hard work. Be available in areas where
many people run away from and make input. Even if you don’t have a clue, be
available and ready to learn.
BE TEACHABLE
Some people can not be taught. Do you fall in this category?
If yes, then it's time for you to learn how to learn, unlearn and relearn. Being
rigid in your methods and strategies and never wanting more flexible approaches
can throw you off balance. Having an open mind is the best way to go about it.
WORK SMART, NOT HARD
Get tools that will enable you to finish your job in less time. Evolve
with technology in handling your job; use better machines and new approaches.
Don’t hang on to analogue systems when the world has evolved to digital.
Finally, to remain relevant, we must constantly
strive to be consistent in being valuable.
